Class Descriptions

BALLET


Mommy, Poppy & Me!  First Steps Together (Ages: 2-3)

Recognizing that young children explore new ideas most confidently in the nurturing environment provided by their parents, this class is designed to get the whole family joyfully moving together.  Toddlers and parents are introduced to basic concepts of dance positions, dynamics, coordination, expression and body awareness.

Ballet I: Movement, Music and Growth (Ages: 4-5)

This class builds a love of movement and music in young children while developing coordination, fine motor skills, and social skills.  The class provides a perfect orientation to dance as an art form within an environment that balances structure with creative exploration and play.

Ballet II: Progressing and Expanding: (Ages: 6-8)

Continuing to provide a sound introduction to the basics of dance in an environment that supports creativity and the joy of movement, Ballet II introduces more structure and a greater emphasis on progression through structured exercises, including barre work and classical ballet combinations.  Students will be challenged to apply themselves physically and mentally to the class, and will see the rewards of these efforts in increased strength and flexibility, confidence, and mental focus.

Ballet III: Training for Young Dancers (Ages 8-11)

Based on teacher’s recommendation

Ballet III aims to build artistry and solid technique in young dancers.  With progressively more challenging exercises at the barre and in center, the class provides a solid technical framework in classical ballet while emphasizing the hallmarks of Nimbus Dance Works’ approach to dance: the artistry and unique voice of each dancer, musicality, athleticism, paired with fluidity and coordination.

Ballet IV: Traning for Pre-Teen Dancers (Ages 11-14)

Based on teacher’s recommendation

Ballet IV adds increasingly rigorous exercises at barre and center, challenging students’ core strength, flexibility, coordination, musicality and fluency with the ballet technique.

Adult Ballet /Ballet V (14+)

Based on teacher’s recommendation

Ballet V provides a pre-professional setting where students are expected to apply themselves with focus.  Ballet V constitutes the basis for Nimbus Dance Works’ Pre-Professional Training Program.  This class offers increasingly challenging movement combination and phrase work.  Students will improve coordination, strength, and confidence finding their own expression within the Ballet form.  The class is appropriate for intermediate/advanced dancers.

Pre Pointe (Ballet Levels III / IV)

Based on teacher’s recommendation

A class separate but supplemental to Ballet with the goal of building the specific strength and proper alignment in a student’s ankles for progression into pointe work.

Pointe (Ballet Levels IV / V)

Based on teacher’s recommendation

Students will learn and practice barre and center work on pointe with emphasis on articulation of the foot and body alignment as well as study of the proper techniques for the execution of more difficult steps.


A TRACK PROGRAM

In our efforts to best deliver the highest caliber of training as well as classes that are suited to individual student levels and experience, we initiated a new system of class placement. Students seeking a more intensive training will be placed in the “A Track” – where there are minimum weekly class requirements and a faster-paced classroom environment. Students who are interested in a less demanding schedule or who require more foundation level classes will be placed in “Open Placement” classes. All placement is at the discretion of Nimbus Dance Works teachers and staff.

Ballet IIA
2 or more technique classes per week – at least 1 ballet class
 

Ballet IIIA
3 or more technique classes per week – including at least 1 Ballet & 1 Modern class
 


MODERN

Modern II (Ages: 6-8)

Modern Dance gives expression to ever-evolving styles and approaches to movement in the world today.  This class challenges students to push their physical limits, to try new ways of moving and learn movement phrases from Nimbus Dance Works varied professional repertoire.

Modern III (Ages: 8-11)

This class builds on Modern II and includes more codified techniques including Lester Horton and Martha Graham-based techniques.  Students at this level are given more challenging exercises and are entering into a more intermediate level of movement.

Modern IV (Ages 11-14)

In Level IV modern class, students execute challenging phrase work and movement styles. Students progress through modern dance techniques including Graham-based and Horton-based styles (depending on instructor).

Modern V / Adult (Ages 14+)

Modern V provides a pre-professional setting where students are expected to apply themselves with focus.  Modern V constitutes the basis for Nimbus Dance Works’ Pre-Professional Training Program.  This class offers increasingly challenging movement combination and phrase work within Modern techniques including Graham-based and Horton-based styles (depending on instructor).  Students will improve coordination, strength, and confidence finding their own expression within the Modern form.  The class is appropriate for intermediate/advanced dancers.
 


HIP HOP

Hip Hop II (Ages: 6-8)

Hip Hop II is geared towards younger dance students – providing an age-appropriate approach to the exhilarating hip hop styles including Popping, Locking, Breaking, and more.  Students enrolled in Hip Hop II must also be enrolled in at least one technique class each week.

Hip Hop III (Ages: 8-11)

ip Hop III allows students to break down steps and phrases from various Hip Hop techniques into funky and easy-to-learn sequences.  The warm-up and movement progressions make for an incredible work-out and introduction into more advanced Hip Hop dance.

Hip Hop IV

This class offers Hip Hop phrases and steps to create sequences and dances while allowing students to develop their own stylistic preferences.  The warm-up and movement progressions combine for an incredible work-out and improvement in Hip Hop vocabulary.

Hip Hop V

Students will be learning advanced combinations and floor work from various Hip Hop techniques including Popping, Locking, Breaking and more. Choreography will be taught quickly for students to learn skills of speed, comprehension and vocabulary used in the field.


COMPANY CLASS

For advanced / professional level dancers only. Taught by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott, this class offers increasingly challenging movement combination and phrase work.   Students will improve coordination, strength, and comfort with finding their own expression within the Classical Ballet form.


ADULT PROGRAM

NimbusFIT

The School of Nimbus Dance Works introduces NimbusFIT: an adult program for dance and fitness enthusiasts. NimbusFIT is comprised of fitness classes like Zumba, Pilates and The New STRONG by Zumba, a High Intensity Intermittent Training, and dance classes in Ballet, Modern and Hip-Hop. NimbusFIT is a drop-in program the encourages adults to get fit and offers an artistic experience for older dancers.  Grab a friend and become apart of the Nimbus Family! STRONG by Zumba

A high-intensity workout where every move is synced to a beat.Using only your body weight, STRONG by Zumba® will test your strength and stamina in a powerful cardio and muscle-conditioning session in one, all led by music.

Absolute Beginner Hip Hop

This upbeat class includes mixed movements from various subgenres of Hip Hop culture and influences. Students will learn various styles including popping, breaking, and locking within a structured method with allows for individual creativity and style.

Zumba

A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check.

Ballet

Pilates

Pilates Mat Classes consists of floor work version of the Pilates method. Classes take place in a group setting using your body weight as the source of resistance. In this class you focus on precise movements originating from the center or core of your body. Working from the deepest layers of muscles, which stabilize and support your spine and pelvis, resulting in a strong, flexible spine with ideal posture and alignment.
