Luis Ribagorda
On the Rise - Ballet masterclass
Luis Ribagorda was born in Madrid, Spain, and began his dance training at the age of three. By seven, he was studying at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Madrid, where he trained in classical ballet, contemporary, traditional Spanish dance, and music. In 2001 he won two scholarships at the Castellón Contest to study with Compañía Nacional de Danza 2 and Nederlands Dans Theater II, and later that year received first prize in the Junior Category at the Zaragoza International Dance Contest. During the summers of 2001 and 2002 he was selected for the Europa Dance Project, touring France in principal roles, and in 2002 he earned a full scholarship to The Royal Ballet School in London after competing in the Roseta Mauri International Dance Competition in Reus, Spain. Ribagorda joined Boston Ballet in 2003 and became a member of the corps de ballet with American Ballet Theatre in 2004, performing featured roles around the world. Alongside his dance career, filmmaking remained a lifelong passion, and he began creating films for special events at American Ballet Theatre, including two films for Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie’s 20th anniversary that premiered at the Metropolitan Opera House and a memorial film honoring Frederic Franklin. He has since produced numerous films, documentaries, and promotional works such as Empty Place, Drome, The Breath Between, Elephant Knees, Toi et moi, moi et toi, and the award-winning dance short On A Grass Field, which he co-wrote, co-produced, directed, shot, edited, and scored. In April 2021, while maintaining his demanding dance career, Ribagorda graduated as valedictorian from Full Sail University with a Bachelor of Science in Digital Cinematography and continues to seek collaborations that create meaningful, artistically driven work.
